MidState Magic Sports is committed to developing disciplined, high-character student-athletes through the game of basketball, using competition as a platform to teach accountability, resilience, and leadership. Founded in 2006, our program was built on the belief that development extends beyond the court—preparing young athletes to succeed in all areas of life. As a grassroots basketball program, we provide a structured and competitive environment where our athletes are pushed to compete against elite talent. We emphasize discipline, teamwork, and confidence while helping our athletes grow through both success and adversity. Through intentional coaching and a culture rooted in hard work, we focus on developing well-rounded individuals. About Kendall Patterson

As a former MidState Magic player and current Program Director, Kendall Patterson is deeply committed to preserving and advancing the legacy of the program that helped shape his own journey. Having stepped into the Program Director role in 2021, Kendall has focused on building upon the foundation established by the organization's founders while continuing to create opportunities for young athletes throughout Alamance County and surrounding communities. His passion for youth development, mentorship, and basketball stems from firsthand experience, having benefited from the same guidance and opportunities that MidState Magic provides today.

Basketball, Educational, and Leadership Experience

Born and raised in Burlington, North Carolina, Kendall attended Graham High School, where he was coached by MidState Magic founder Rod Cousin. A three-year varsity basketball letterman, he helped lead Graham High School to the 2013 2A Mid-State Conference Championship. During his high school career, Kendall scored more than 1,000 points and graduated as the school's all-time leader in assists while also excelling academically. Kendall continued his basketball career at Barton College and Tusculum University, where he served as a team leader and standout student-athlete. Throughout his collegiate career, he scored more than 1,000 points, recorded over 300 assists, and earned All-Conference recognition while completing his Bachelor of Science in Business in 2017. Beyond his playing accomplishments, Kendall has dedicated himself to coaching and mentoring young athletes through middle school and travel basketball. He believes sports provide invaluable lessons that extend far beyond competition, helping young people develop confidence, discipline, leadership, and resilience.

Faith, Mentorship, and Community Impact

His faith remains a central part of his life and leadership philosophy. Kendall regularly attends church and strives to live by Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Today, Kendall's greatest passion is ensuring MidState Magic continues to thrive for future generations. As a former player who now leads the organization, he is dedicated to honoring the program's history, serving its families, and taking MidState Magic to new heights while continuing its mission of impacting young lives through basketball.

About Nikki

As a co-founder of MidState Magic, Nikki has been an integral part of the program's mission since its inception in 2006. Alongside the other founders, she helped build the organization with the goal of creating opportunities for young athletes throughout Alamance County and surrounding communities. Nikki played a key leadership role in establishing and growing the girls' basketball program, providing young female athletes with a platform to develop their skills, gain exposure, and pursue their athletic and academic goals.

Basketball, Coaching, and Leadership Experience

A former professional basketball player, Nikki competed internationally in both New Zealand and Germany. Her experience competing at the professional level has allowed her to mentor and guide countless athletes throughout her coaching career, sharing valuable lessons about hard work, perseverance, and dedication. For nearly two decades, Nikki has remained committed to helping young people succeed both on and off the court. Her impact can be seen in the many athletes and families she has supported through MidState Magic, as well as the opportunities she has helped create for future generations.

Family and Personal Life

Outside of basketball, Nikki enjoys spending time with her family and creating lasting memories with loved ones. Her favorite role, however, is being a grandmother, and she proudly adores her grandbaby.

About Rod Cousin

Since returning home from a successful professional basketball career, Rod has been a driving force behind the growth and success of MidState Magic. As a co-founder of the program, he has dedicated himself to helping young athletes reach their full potential both on and off the court. Since 2006, Rod has played a pivotal role in mentoring, developing, and advocating for student-athletes, helping create opportunities that have allowed countless players to advance to the next level.

Basketball, Professional, and Coaching Experience

A standout multi-sport athlete at Graham High School, Rod earned All-Conference, All-State, and Conference Player of the Year honors in both football and basketball. His impact on the basketball program was so significant that his No. 14 jersey was retired by the school. He continued his athletic career at Radford University, where he established himself as one of the program's top point guards, holding the school's all-time records for assists and steals during his career. Following college, Rod played professional basketball internationally for 15 years, competing in countries including Germany and New Zealand. The knowledge and experience he gained throughout his professional career have become invaluable resources for the athletes he mentors today.

When he's not in the gym, Rod enjoys watching basketball and football, spending time with family, and eating popcorn.

Penney Patterson is the co-founder of MidState Magic Sports, established in 2006 to create meaningful opportunities for young athletes throughout Alamance County and surrounding communities. Through her leadership in youth development, she has helped student-athletes gain exposure, pursue collegiate opportunities, and grow both on and off the court, with a strong emphasis on education, character, and community involvement.

A former scholar-athlete in basketball and volleyball at High Point University, Penney is passionate about mentoring young people, developing talent, and expanding access to opportunities for youth.

Penney brings a diverse professional background in financial services, entrepreneurship, telecommunications (AT&T), and IT consulting. She has served for more than 18 years as a Talent Development Executive with StoneLaurel Consulting and previously owned Patterson Insurance Agency as a Nationwide Insurance agent.

Penney enjoys traveling, family time, attending sporting events, and serving others through faith and community engagement. She is a loving wife to her husband, Mike, mother to Keristen and Kendall, and proud “MaMa” to her three grandsons.

Keristen has been involved in basketball since the age of 10 and developed a strong passion for the game through years of competition and teamwork. During her youth basketball career, she played for MidState Magic and later competed for Graham High School, where she was a member of the team that advanced to the North Carolina State Championship game. As the Administrative Director for MidState Magic, Keristen plays a vital role in supporting the organization's day-to-day operations. She helps coordinate administrative functions, supports communication with families, and assists in ensuring the program continues to provide a positive experience for athletes and parents. Keristen earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics for Business from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a minor in Religious Studies. Her organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to serving others help support the continued success and growth of MidState Magic.

About Justin Cousin

Justin Cousin serves as the Vice President of MidState Magic Basketball and Head Coach of the program’s 17U team. A former Division I student-athlete, professional basketball player, educator, and coach, Justin brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the organization. Basketball has always been a major part of Justin’s life, both as a player and coach. He is passionate about mentoring young athletes, helping them develop on and off the court, studying the game, training players, spending time with family and friends, and investing in personal growth through faith, leadership, and continuous learning.

Basketball Playing & Coaching Experience

As a player, Justin starred at Graham High School, where he became the school’s all-time leading scorer and earned the rare honor of having his jersey retired. He continued his playing career at Radford University before pursuing professional basketball overseas. Following his playing career, Justin transitioned into coaching and gained valuable experience at multiple levels of collegiate basketball, including stops at the University of Georgia, Radford University, and Wabash Valley College, one of the nation’s premier junior college basketball programs. Justin currently serves as the Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at Graham High School, where he is committed to rebuilding a championship culture while developing young men through accountability, discipline, and toughness. In addition to coaching, he serves as an Exceptional Children teacher, working daily to support and empower students with diverse learning needs.

As Vice President of MidState Magic, Justin plays a key role in athlete development, program leadership, community outreach, fundraising initiatives, and helping young athletes navigate opportunities both on and off the court. His passion for mentorship and commitment to serving others continue to make a lasting impact throughout the community. One of Justin’s proudest accomplishments is returning to his alma mater to lead the same basketball program that helped shape him as both a player and a person. Zavian Jackson is a professional basketball player and Goodwill Ambassador with the Harlem Globetrotters, where he performs under the nickname "Sky" and has spent the past five years entertaining fans while making a positive impact in communities across the globe. A standout athlete throughout his basketball career, Zavian was ranked among the Top 60 high school basketball players in North Carolina. He continued his success at the collegiate level at Southwest Tennessee Community College, where he established himself as one of the top junior college basketball players in the nation. His accomplishments earned him the opportunity to compete at the NCAA Division I level at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Today, Zavian serves as an Assistant Coach with MidState Magic, helping develop young athletes both on and off the court. His coaching philosophy emphasizes skill development, leadership, discipline, accountability, and preparing players for success at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels. As both a professional athlete and coach, Zavian is passionate about using basketball as a platform to inspire confidence, build character, and create opportunities for the next generation.

Through his career with the Harlem Globetrotters, Zavian has traveled to approximately 40 countries across five continents, experiencing different cultures and using basketball as a universal language to connect with people around the world.

After high school, Antonio continued his athletic career at Johnson C. Smith University, where he attended on a football scholarship. His collegiate experience helped shape his leadership, discipline, and commitment to personal growth both on and off the field.

While becoming a professional athlete was always a dream, Antonio takes great pride in achieving something that few in his family had the opportunity to accomplish—earning a college scholarship and obtaining a college education. He views that achievement as one of the most meaningful milestones in his life. After returning home, Antonio successfully launched and grew a thriving photography business, turning his passion and creativity into a successful entrepreneurial venture. During his time in college, Antonio was actively involved in a mentorship program that supported young people from single-parent households and underserved communities. Through mentorship, sports, and positive guidance, he helped young people develop confidence, life skills, and meaningful relationships while encouraging them to stay on a positive path. Today, Antonio brings that same passion for mentorship, leadership, and athlete development to MidState Magic, where he is committed to helping young athletes grow both on and off the court.

Coyrick Cheek serves as the Head Coach of MidState Magic's 15U team and brings a wealth of leadership, mentorship, and coaching experience to the program. In addition to coaching travel basketball, he also coaches high school basketball, where he focuses on developing student-athletes in the areas of character, discipline, leadership, and accountability. While basketball has become a significant part of his life, football was his primary sport growing up and helped shape the competitive mindset, work ethic, and leadership qualities that he brings to coaching today. Outside of athletics, Coach Cheek serves as a Plant Supervisor at Franklin Products Inc., where he continues to demonstrate strong leadership and a commitment to excellence in the workplace.

Jahnathan Maxwell brings a wealth of high-level playing experience to MidState Magic. He began his collegiate basketball career at Southwest Mississippi Community College before continuing at Odessa College, where he competed at one of the highest levels of junior college basketball in the country. Following his successful JUCO career, Jahnathan advanced to the Division I level, playing at Iona University and later at North Carolina Central University. During his time at Iona, he helped the program win a conference championship and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament, competing on college basketball's biggest stage during March Madness.

O'Bryan Gwynn has been a dedicated member of the MidState Magic coaching staff for six years and currently serves as an assistant coach for the program's 14U team. He is passionate about investing in the next generation, whether that's through coaching, encouraging young athletes, or simply helping neighborhood kids enjoy the games they love. Outside of coaching, O'Bryan enjoys spending time at home with his teenage twin sons and his beautiful fiancée.

O'Bryan brings more than eight years of youth coaching experience. He coached youth football with the Burlington Air Cavs for eight years, working with athletes ages 4–14, and has coached youth basketball for seven years, including six seasons with MidState Magic and one season with the Air Cavs.

A graduate of Cummings High School in Burlington, North Carolina (Class of 2003), O'Bryan was a standout multi-sport athlete. He was a four-year varsity wrestler, finishing his career with a 138-33 record, earning Super 32 rankings each year, and qualifying for the state tournament. He also played three years of varsity football and helped lead Cummings to a state championship during his senior season. After high school, he attended Winston-Salem State University for two years.

Fun Fact: O'Bryan considers himself a well-rounded athlete and believes he could compete in just about any sport he played—including basketball, despite never playing for his high school team. However, he believes he's a better coach than he ever was as a player, thanks to his attention to detail and the mentorship he received from experienced coaches throughout his journey.

Carlos Bagley serves as the 4th/5th Grade Coach for MidState Magic and is passionate about developing young athletes both on and off the court. With several years of youth basketball coaching experience, Carlos is committed to teaching the fundamentals of the game while helping players build confidence, discipline, teamwork, and a strong work ethic.

Prior to joining MidState Magic, Carlos coached with Gibsonville Recreation, where he led multiple teams to championship success and earned a reputation for creating a positive, competitive environment centered on player development. His coaching philosophy emphasizes growth, accountability, and helping each athlete reach their full potential.

Outside of basketball, Carlos is passionate about giving back to the youth and believes in using sports as a platform to mentor, inspire, and positively impact the next generation.
